The IGO PAC internship has benefited me and my future career in a plethora of ways. I have learned a lot about people, how to work with others, what I like and do not like in a workplace, and how I work under a boss. I have had a job for a few years now, however, it does not compare to this experience and this way of work. I have learned a lot about myself, and have learned new skills that I hope to apply to my current job, and any future career path I choose.
Being a political science major, this was the best way to finish my degree, and apply what I have learned throughout college. I had the perfect taste of politics, during my internship. I learned a lot about the political world, what goes into a campaign, what goes into polling, gathering field reports, studying politics, and more. No class I have taken as a political science major could prepare me for what is really involved in politics, but this internship was the best way to give me real-world experience.
I believe that this internship was perfect for a political science major, and the knowledge I had did help me in some ways, but nothing but real-life experience could really prepare you for this internship. Success in this internship for me was not measured by educational requirements prior to taking it on, but by what I took from this internship and what knowledge and experience I am leaving with. You can learn about political theories, and politicians all you want, but interacting with politicians, working on media concerning the PAC, political writing, and more can only be learned from experience. While I do believe that my political essays and classes helped me somewhat in this internship, I believe that drive and willingness to learn are what allowed me to be successful and enjoy this internship fully.
I have always been interested in politics, and have considered making politics my future career, possibly after I go through law school, but after completing my internship, I feel as though even if I am not on the front line of politics, I enjoy working behind the scenes. I think this internship helped me realize I do enjoy politics and law and has driven me more into making sure I get into law school.
If I choose a career as a lawyer, I will most definitely need more education, which hopefully I can continue on at UNLV next year, I will need to score high on the LSAT, go through years of schooling, and then pass the bar exam. There are a lot of requirements to become a successful lawyer. After I have my law degree, I hope to have some involvement in politics in one way or another.
Some advice I have for incoming interns is not to be afraid to ask questions. I have to say, I was a little intimidated at first in being in a new environment, somewhat out of my comfort zone, but the more I asked questions, and the more I learned, the more comfortable I grew and I was able to enjoy my internship experience even more.
Background info on the photo: I was so lucky to get to go on a trip to end my internship in Washington, D.C. Being in an internship surrounding politics, was the ideal culminating experience. I had the opportunity to tour the U.S. Capital Building. Congress was in session at the time, so I saw so many politicians, and was in the center, the true capital of politics. The picture I am including is the inside of the capitol building, the mural on the inside of the dome. The mural shows some of the major political and historical events in United States history. I felt inspired seeing the capitol building, the US capitol, the hub of politics, and our government.

Hey TommI, I totally agree with every word you said. Being that political science is my major also, I would have to say that no class experience or assignments or tests can prepare you for the real world situations and I feel that this internship program was the best tool for all of us because we got hands on experience in the career field that we plan to go into. Hopefully in the near future I plan to run for congress so getting to understand the workings of a political campaign is very important. I wish you the best of luck in your future political career endeavors and I know because of this internship program that you will be successful.
