My internship with NAMI SNV this summer has helped me develop skills and explore different paths that will continue to benefit me in my future career. I have improved my verbal and communication skills and my software skills. I’m thankful I got the opportunity to be trained for Support Group Facilitating and NAMI NV CARES. This was my first experience working with a mental health organization. As a criminal justice and psychology double major, it was great to be able to have this experience working with an organization focused on providing resources and support for those affected by mental illness.
I believe that the psychology classes I’ve taken in my undergrad have helped me be successful in this internship. The one I think back on the most is my abnormal psychology course when I learned about each mental illness thoroughly. However, considering we don’t offer advice and therapy with NAMI, only support and resources, I don’t think taking these psychology courses is required. The training was very educational and helpful. I think I would enjoy this type of career if it was focused on juvenile or incarcerated individuals. I value being able to help people who are struggling, and I am very passionate about people who are affected by the criminal justice system. One piece of advice I have for incoming interns is to manage their time wisely. There may be multiple tasks and projects you are a part of. Stay organized and consistent with your responsibilities. I also would advise people to make the most of their internship experience by stepping out of their comfort zone. Growth can be uncomfortable, but it can be so rewarding.
