Interning at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has been a defining chapter in my academic and personal growth. Stepping into the world of mental health advocacy through non-profit work at NAMI exposed me to diverse experiences that broadened my perspective tremendously! Additionally, it deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by individuals dealing with mental health conditions.
My journey at NAMI was multifaceted, spanning various roles and responsibilities that enriched my internship experience. One of the fundamental aspects was operating the helpline, where I had the privilege of listening to those seeking guidance and support. Engaging with callers allowed me to witness firsthand the impact of compassionate and empathetic conversation in providing solace to individuals navigating their mental health journeys. It honed my communication skills and taught me the importance of empathy in supporting those in need.
Another significant component of my internship involved my training to host support groups. These sessions provided a haven for individuals grappling with mental health issues to share their stories, fears, and triumphs. Facilitating these groups demanded sensitivity, active listening, and the ability to create an inclusive space. Witnessing the power of peer support and solidarity within these groups underscored the importance of community in mental health recovery.
Participating in tabling events allowed me to take NAMI's advocacy efforts beyond the office walls. Engaging with the community, disseminating information about mental health resources, and debunking misconceptions about mental illnesses became pivotal aspects of my role. These events were instrumental in breaking down stigmas surrounding mental health and fostering open discussions in public spaces.
Moreover, a pivotal aspect of my internship involved delivering "Ending the Silence" presentations to youth. These sessions aimed to empower young minds by initiating open discussions about mental health, reducing stigma, and equipping them with valuable tools for self-care and seeking help. Witnessing the impact of these conversations on shaping young perspectives reinforced my belief in the transformative power of education and early intervention in mental health advocacy.
However, the pinnacle of my internship experience was being part of the NAMI walks and NAMI conference. The NAMI walks event epitomized the spirit of unity and support as people from all walks of life converged to raise awareness and funds for mental health initiatives. The palpable energy and shared commitment to mental health advocacy were awe-inspiring, reinforcing the impact of collective action in driving change. Attending the NAMI conference was an immersive learning experience. Engaging with experts, advocates, and individuals with lived experiences broadened my knowledge base. Workshops, keynote speeches, and panel discussions provided insights into innovative approaches to mental health care, policy advocacy, and destigmatization efforts.
Overall, my internship at NAMI has been a transformative journey. It equipped me with invaluable skills, deepened my passion for mental health advocacy, and instilled a profound sense of compassion and understanding. The opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people's lives by offering support, education, and advocacy has been humbling and empowering.
Looking ahead, I see that my internship at NAMI has profoundly influenced my career aspirations. Exposure to diverse experiences has solidified my passion for mental health advocacy and inspired my choice to continue to pursue a marriage and family therapy career.
In conclusion, my internship at NAMI has shaped my professional aspirations and deeply impacted my understanding of mental health advocacy and the significance of compassionate support. The experiences gained, from helpline support to engaging in community events and youth presentations, have guided my path toward a career centered on supporting individuals and families in their mental health journeys. NAMI has provided me with a solid foundation and a passion-driven purpose as I step forward into the field of marriage and family therapy, dedicated to fostering understanding, resilience, and healing within relationships affected by mental health challenges.
Hi Cassia! First of all, a puppies and boba tabling event?! That must've been such an awesome experience! I'm glad to hear that interning with NAMI was impactful for you. I've always said that if I didn't study political science, I would've studied mental health. Mental illness in specific is something I've always wanted to learn more about so it's enlightening to hear how you were able to support people from all walks of life that struggle with this aspect of their lives. I also think it's amazing that you had the opportunity to deliver "Ending the Silence" presentations to the youth and have open discussions about mental health, self-care, and ways to seek help. I genuinely wish my middle school or high school would've had these presentations as I began my struggle with mental health around those years. All in all, reading your blog post was extremely heart warming. I might even look into NAMI myself!
