This semester I interned at the National Alliance on Mental Illness - Southern Nevada (NAMI SNV). In my understanding, internships are a great way to gain hands-on professional experience that can be invaluable during my job search. A major part of my internship is learning more about the field, and my individual strengths and weaknesses. During my internship, I have had the opportunity to apply what I have learned in the classroom to real-life situations and develop new skills that will allow me to succeed in my future career. I have participated in tabling events, weekly helplines, co-hosting mental health discussion events, as well as managing organization’s social media. I have also been fortunate to have supportive colleagues who have prepared me to succeed in a long-term position, and it will continue to benefit me because I’m able to establish connections and networks with people in the field.
As a psychology major, interning in a mental health organization is highly tied into my field of study. Although there are no educational requirements for this internship, I do believe a bachelor or higher degree is needed in order to be successful in this internship. I am interested in this particular career after completing my internship because while I have gained more real experience, I understand that this is what I want to do in the future. In order to secure a full-time position in this field, I would have to do multiple mental health training, practice communication and interpersonal skills as well as maintain a master or higher degree in education.
I would use what I was told by my supervisor as one piece of advice for incoming interns: “Once you are used to what you are doing right now, your internship will be over soon.” Therefore do not stress too much, and adjust things at your own pace.
Here's a picture of a tabling event during my internship.
