My internship at the Love Yourself Foundation has been a game-changer for my future career in forensic psychiatry. I've had the chance to dive deep into mental health and research, getting hands-on experience that's incredibly valuable. The Foundation’s values of compassion, inclusivity, and evidence-based practice resonate deeply with me and have guided my work. This experience has sharpened my research abilities, deepened my understanding of mental health issues, and helped me build a network of professional contacts that will be invaluable as I move forward in my career.

Moreover, this internship directly supports my major in forensic psychology. At the Love Yourself Foundation, I study mental health patterns and develop strategies to support mental well-being. This work aligns perfectly with the principles of forensic psychology, which emphasizes understanding and addressing mental health issues within the legal system. The practical application of my academic studies through this internship reinforces the theories and concepts I’ve learned, such as assessing and treating individuals in forensic settings. This hands-on experience is invaluable as it bridges the gap between my coursework and real-world practice, preparing me for a successful career in forensic psychiatry. The Love yourself foundation continues to educate the public about mental health, reducing stigma, and promoting early intervention, which are crucial for understanding and addressing mental health issues within forensic contexts. This approach also supports preventative measures, aiming to prevent legal issues associated with untreated mental health conditions. Additionally, it provides a holistic view of mental health, considering social, cultural, and environmental factors, which is essential in forensic psychology for comprehensive assessment and treatment.

During my internship, my background in psychology was indispensable. Classes in research methods, statistics, and abnormal psychology were particularly valuable. Understanding ethical guidelines in psychological research was also crucial for conducting studies responsibly. My coursework and my mental health technician certificate laid a strong foundation for this role.

This internship has intensified my passion for forensic psychiatry. Engaging directly with research data and observing the impact of mental health programs has been incredibly rewarding. It has reaffirmed that this is the right path for me. The complexities and challenges of mental health research have only deepened my commitment to this field.

To secure a full-time position as a forensic psychiatrist, I will first obtain a medical degree (MD or DO), building on my psychology background from UNLV. After completing a residency in psychiatry, I will pursue a fellowship in forensic psychiatry to specialize further and align with my passion for mental health. To enhance my skills, I will seek additional training and certifications such as Mental Health First Aid, Certified Forensic Mental Health Evaluator (CFMHE), and courses in forensic psychology. Training in trauma-informed care, psychopharmacology, and advanced psychological assessment will be invaluable. Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses in forensic psychiatry and legal and ethical issues will keep me current in the field.

In addition to these academic and clinical training steps, I will need to gain licensure to practice psychiatry. It is also essential for me to acquire specific skills in psychological assessment, therapy techniques, and forensic evaluations. I intend to continue building my experience through internships, volunteer work, and research projects related to forensic psychology and psychiatry. These efforts will prepare me for the demands of a career in forensic psychiatry.

One piece of advice for incoming interns is to be proactive and take initiative. Don't be afraid to ask questions, seek feedback, and take on challenging tasks.
