The Where Our Children Play organization internship has benefited my future career by giving me the experience to utilize my critical skills and share my ideas and not being afraid to be turned down but actually get some good feedback from Joel the CEO of WOCP as well as my fellow interns. This organization has also given me the experience to see what goes behind a non profit and all the work and passion that goes into it. I would say that this internship applies in some ways to my major of study, it gives me a good idea on what it’s like to work with multiple people and communicate and find different creative ideas to help children in youth sports as well as help the coaches and parents understand as well. With the career I’m thinking of doing it does have to do with helping children and I believe that is what WOCP is doing and I wanted to get the feel of that. Although I was expecting to work with the children since my future career is based on being surrounded by them and helping them, this internship has taught me what goes behind helping children. I am glad that I experienced what goes behind helping the children and do want to move forward and in the future actually work with children and gain that experience as well. Personally I don’t believe I needed any educational requirements, the CEO of WOCP Joel was very open and asked me to give him a list of things I was good at as well as interested to do and learn. This internship, if anything, got me out of my shell and I can now say I know how to create a ticket event website and do other things I didn’t know I was capable of doing because I was too afraid to do something I have never done or tried. I am still interested in my particular career after this internship because although it wasn’t what I expected and I know as a social worker you need have particular experiences this internship made me realize that I am capable of learning new things and working with whatever falls on my lap and I wouldn’t have realized my capability if it weren’t for this internship. It taught me to work harder and not be afraid to dive into my career and get the experience that I need to be successful in social work. To secure a full-time position in this particular field I would say you need confidence, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and at least some type of Microsoft skills and know how to work with a computer, pdf, google docs etc. and organization skills. A piece of advice I have for incoming interns would be to not be afraid to share their ideas or ask questions and give feedback to others as well as to not be afraid to try something new throughout their internship and really expand their skills and creativity.
Since this internship was web-based and was all through zoom call meetings. I uploaded a short video of something I am currently working on for the organization.
