The way this internship has benefited my future career and how it will continue to benefit it is by teaching me what academic advising is all about. I would like to make a career in academic advising and the experience gained in this internship gave me an insight into the profession. This gave me an understanding of core values in advising and how passionate you must be to be one. I also learned a lot about networking and organization.
From what I have heard from my academic advisor, psychology is a great fit for academic advising, many have this degree in collaboration with a Master in Higher Education and this makes the perfect combination for a successful career in academic advising.
I would say that educational requirements are not needed beforehand to get into this internship, however, I think that in order to understand and processes all of the information provided for you in this internship a person needs to have an understanding of the institution's resources and different programs that the college offers.
I think still hold an interest in this profession because I like helping people and I notice that there are advisors that do this job not because they like it or they have a passion for it but because it is a comfortable job, however, I do not want to be like that, I want to contribute to this profession and be genuinely helpful to students.
In order for me to get a full-time position in this field I would need to finish my bachelor’s first, in addition having this internship also helps a lot with this I can land an academic advisor position but if I want to keep being an advisor, I will need to get a master’s degree.
One piece of advice for incoming interns would be to get involved with your academic advisor. They can open many doors for them, and they can also provide many resources. I remember when I started this interest in academic advising, I mentioned this to my advisor, and she then came to me with the idea of an internship and until this date, she is one of the most valuable people to me at UNLV.
