This Summer I have interned with the office of Senator Jon Tester in Washington, DC. This internship began on May 18th and I will finish it on August 2nd and this has provided so many opportunities to my future career. For starters, I will be allowed to use this on my resume and LinkedIn profile in the future and I believe this might help me stand out more for more prestigious opportunities while I am waiting to finish my undergraduate degree of Political Science (2 semesters remaining!) Not only will this affect my future career but if I ever plan to come work in Washington DC after graduation I have this as a feel for small parts of different jobs within the Senate Personal Offices. This internship ties with my major heavily because I get to see the process of legislation with my own eyes, which being a Political Science Major is incredible! For my application process it took about 8 months, I submitted references from academic and professional settings, provided a writing sample, cover letter, my resume, and had to fill out their application process. After finishing this there was an interview that was conducted. I believe part of my success in this process was through writing and general communication skills while being interviewed and speaking on the phone professionally. I am debating this a possible option after graduation but I would want to go back to study law after one or two years and practice criminal law. To acquire a full time position in this field I would need to finish my relevant undergraduate work and most of the time people start out interning for a little while before having a full time position. One piece of advice I would give is take it seriously because it is your future that you are influencing heavily in those particular moments, but also have fun while you do it because you want to enjoy your internship as well.

Hi Aren,
I enjoyed reading your blog post. I think it’s amazing that you have been working in Washington D.C. this summer. What an amazing experience. I hope you have had time to visit the museums and monuments there. The application process for your internship sounds very intense. It sounds like you had a lot of completion, but you were able to rise to the top and secure the position through your excellent communication skills. I think it is a great idea to gain a year or two of experience before starting law school. Congratulations and Good Luck!
