For my internship I worked at Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum, a newly opened art museum featuring work from a single artist. I worked closely with the museum director to improve and promote the museum. The most important skill I think is needed for an internship is creativity. During my time at my internship we worked on many different projects all with their own challenges, being able to be creative with my solutions and work was the best skill I had. I am a psychology major but chose an internship in the arts because it offered a chance to see behind the scenes of running a business and aligned with my creative interests. I am interested into going into alternative types of therapy like art therapy so developing a deeper appreciation for art and the community was extremely important for me.
Through this internship I have become much more confident in my interpersonal communication skills and my problem solving. I collaborated with many different people during my time here which forced me out of my comfort zone. By the end I found that I could share my ideas much easier and with more clarity. Since I had different work day to day I never really knew what to prepare for, I really enjoyed this part of the internship because it developed my problem solving skills very quickly. I was able to work in many different roles and learn not only about art but about how a museum runs.

Autumn,
This sounds like such an amazing experience! I used to work in a history museum and it was probably my favorite job that I have ever had. I love that you chose an internship that is not directly related to your major. It’s super important to see other fields and it seems like you found one that you really enjoyed! and can connect to your future career path! Museums are such a great space to learn and they keep you on your toes as you never know what will happen. I think this was great since you are interested in therapy and adaptability is definitely a skill that you were able to gain!
