During my internship, I was able to gain a lot of writing experience. I never had an opportunity to write something other than an academic paper or for an application. I also learned how to work remotely with a team and the importance of consistent communication. I think all these skills can be applied in my future work. Although I aspire to be a lawyer and operate in the legal spaces, I feel that these skills can be transferable.
As an English major, working on a blog aligns with my major. I personally feel like an English major is an asset in any field. I believe that having strong written communication is a necessary skill that is the baseline for almost any profession
I personally don’t think you need any previous experience to intern at the LYF. The only thing that I would recommend is that you like/want to know more about mental health and sustainability.
Although I would not mind working on a blog or being a writer, I aspire to go into the legal field and apply my talents and passions there. Hopefully, there can be more legal opportunities for non-political science or prelaw majors.
In order to be successful in this field and to secure a full-time job, I would need a portfolio or samples of previous work. I would also need to know different writing styles and formats. I also believe having knowledge about different marketing and website platforms like MailChimp and Wix could be helpful.
One piece of advice I would have for interns is to take this course before your final semester.
Hi Jameela!
You did a wonderful job at LYF, since you are looking more into the legal field I'm sure you can use what you learned on teaching others on social media about the legal system! I'm sure you'll do amazing. It was a pleasure working with you, I wish you luck on your endeavors!!
Hello Jameela,
I am glad you were able to have a good internship experience where you were able learn and try out new things. I think that learning the importance of consistent communication will be beneficial for you in your future career as a lawyer. The Love Yourself Foundation sounds like it is a good organization as they help with mental health and self esteem. This is something that is sometimes overlooked, so having someone there to help others with these challenges is great.
