I had a great experience interning as an administrative assistant at a therapy/counseling private practice called Sierra Therapy and Wellness, which I feel like my educational experience prepared me a lot for. Namely, some of the basic math, computer science, and communications skills I've been taught allowed me to be successful in an office setting. Having an understanding of abnormal psychology was also helpful when I was tasked with finding books, articles, and other materials that could be used in the treatment of different conditions. This internship has also prepared me very much for my future career as a therapist, where I hope to be working in a private practice myself, as it has exposed me to many of the inner workings and administrative tasks behind running a therapist's office such as managing schedules, client files, and insurance paperwork. This therapy setting has allowed me to apply knowledge from psychology, my major of study, as well as given me real-life context to some of the subjects I've been taught. I am certainly still interested in a career as a mental health counselor after participating in this internship, possibly even more than before since I now have a better understanding of the tasks and skills that the job requires. In order to round out my administrative experience, I luckily have a job at UNLV's community clinic lined up. And I'll need much more experience with the therapeutic side of the job, of course, which I'll definitely get during my graduate program's internships and practicums and my post-grad internships before getting a full license.
