I had the pleasure of interning for the Love Yourself Foundation this Spring semester and I can confidently say that I’m finishing this internship with useful and transferable skills that I’m sure to use in the future. I was a Blog/Newsletter Writer for this organization so I needed strong writing skills, which I have been developing through my major (history). The only setback is that history essays are much more structured than the blog posts required by the organization, so I had to become comfortable with having a voice in my writing and expressing confidence in my words. I know I just said that was a setback because of my major, but it’s also ironically exactly the skills I needed to further develop my writing skills for my history classes, which is exactly why I chose the Blog Writer position! If I continue pursuing History research, then I will be sure to take these writing skills with me throughout the rest of my career. Even if I decide I don’t want to stick with history, I know strong writing skills can be useful for an array of jobs, so I’m happy to see how much progress I’ve made in this internship. This internship also introduced me to the world of non-profit organizations and social media marketing, making me feel safer about possibly deciding not to stick with History research after I graduate. While it made me feel safe by exposing me to jobs and skills I hadn’t given much thought to, it also made me realize how much I actually enjoy the structure involved with writing History essays, and encouraged me to stick with this field a little longer after earning my Bachelor’s. One thing I do wish I had been more involved with is the tabling opportunities offered with the internship, since these events force us to practice giving a short, but convincing summary of what you do and how you're useful (in this case, "you" refers to the organization). See below for a picture of our merch table at one of the tabling events this semester!
