This internship has benefitted my career by giving me a better understanding of how non-profit organizations operate. As someone who wants to volunteer and improve eye health in underfunded communities, I think this was a good way to see how events and plans are organized within a small team. My internship does not tie into my major of study because I was more focused on graphic design rather than my field of study Psychology. I believe that in this internship, will have to be experienced in some forms of public speaking and cultural mindfulness. Since this is an organization dedicated to the community, one should be familiar with social climates and how to speak to those in their community. I am not interested in this particular career after completing my internship because I would rather have a job with more routine rather than planning event to event.
One type of training that I think would be helpful to secure a full-time position in this field is sensitivity training. People who get into this kind of work will be hearing all different types of stories and backgrounds. One has to ensure that the person stays compassionate and understanding of anyone’s situation. I also believe the person should have a decent amount of volunteer experience to demonstrate themselves as a community-oriented person.
One piece of advice for incoming interns is to always to honest with your staff and admin team. Your transparency should be appreciated and taken into account to curate a better and more welcoming workplace. Even if you’re behind on work, being honest and asking for help or accommodations will improve your overall work ethic and the work ethic of your team.
Hello Janel ,
I found your honesty refreshing, espcially when you mentioined that you are not interested in having that particular career as a future career. Im glad you learned what type of work environment suits your needs and goals. I would agree with you about wanting a routine rather than event to event. I think your advice to incoming interns is helpful and I hope they take it into consideration.
Thank you for sharing,
Andrea
