Internship Reflection Blog Post
This internship has benefitted me in ways that I wouldn’t have ever imagined to be honest. I plan on going into Sports Broadcasting. When I initially enrolled at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, I went to school to become a physical education teacher, with a minor degree in athletic coaching. Well since I had a medical emergency and came back to school, within two years of re enrolling I was able to switch my degree, refocus my attention toward a different degree and thrive. I was able to enroll, change my major to multidisciplinary studies, which in turn allowed me to change my major and focus on some different elements that were not initially available to me. I was able to change my major and because I was able to keep Physical Education as part of my major, then because I wanted to still have a background in PE I was able to add journalism, and communications to my degree. Adding those two components to my degree has meant everything to my future which when I first graduated high school I was inspired by Stuart Scott from ESPN. Having had the ability to venture off into a different major is now actually more conducive to what I originally wanted to do and has given me a platform to perform in a journalistic atmosphere.
Yes, my major tied right into my areas of study, for I was able to coach sports at an assistant level both males and females and was able to work on time management, in game instruction. I was able to teach both males and females with preferred age groups, which gave me an opportunity to teach life components within my faith to the youth.
I would say the communications aspect of my education allowed me to teach some of the learned concepts that I was able to quickly grasp and teach them to said young people and with the time allowed I think most if not an awful lot of those concepts applied. For example, learning empathy which means having the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, especially in a group setting of minors to young adults hopefully inspired and motivated them.
I am interested in coaching which was an essential component of me choosing multidisciplinary studies, instead of choosing interdisciplinary studies, which if I chose PE as one of the components, I had to choose multi. So again, being able to coach while completing my internship gave me a heads up from a different perspective.
I personally don’t need any more skills per say that would enable me to pursue said situations and or positions in the field of coaching, and or journalism. I plan to get my masters in Sports Management to assist my endeavors.
Take Melikabella’s class and you will thrive! Don’t give up! Through hardships if any the University is willing to work with you to get to where I am!
