This internship opened my eyes in many ways, and personally I think it has made me realize that I am in the perfect career path in terms of being a doctor. One day I hope to be able to help others but also having enough self restraint to keep my emotions out of any decision I make for the betterment of the patient or those around me. As I seen patients come in through the back door and families of those patients come in through the front I realized that there are only certain people who can stomach the loss of a loved one or just the loss of human life in general. Many people exited the door completely distraught and for good reason as well. They had just lost a loved one whether it be to old age or to cancer it made me also take a step back and realize that life is very precious and each moment we live is one more moment we got to live compared to others in less fortunate situations. Although I strive to attend medical school I hope to be able to use my psychology major to its fullest extent to really understand myself and those around me and why they do the things they do. Why we make certain decisions and such behaviors that leave others just puzzled. I believe this internship really helped get a grasp of my future work environment and helped me develop some what of an understanding of how hard it will be working in a hospital later on in life especially if i plan to work in the emergency room. Overall I am really glad and thankful for this internship it took me out of my comfort zone and helped me really understand how to manage my time but to also enjoy the moments of life that you may never come across again.
Hi Josh!
I was also an intern at Infinity Hospice Care this semester and I think we actually crossed paths once at the in-patient unit haha! It is great to hear that this experience has helped you further realize your vision of becoming a doctor. I am also a pre-medical student and I agree with you that self-restraint is very important when it comes to a career within healthcare and patient care. Although there can be a lot of grief and loss surrounding this field, it is definitely important to always prioritize what's best for patients and to be there for them first. Overall, this internship in a hospice facility has helped me work on that skill, as well as different ways regarding how to be a source of support/comfort for patients and their families. Great job this semester :)
I'm so proud of you Josh. I know this was a challenging semester for you, and you still stayed committed to your internship and the people you were helping there. This will be a great skill for you to take into your future. Thanks for being who you are!
