Growth through experience.

My internship has been incredibly beneficial for my future career, offering my first professional experience in counseling. Previously, I engaged in counseling for personal growth, but this opportunity allowed me to see the process from the other side of the table. Aspiring to be an addiction counselor, working at this mental health clinic has provided excellent insight into the practical aspects of counseling. This experience aligns perfectly with my psychology major, boosting my confidence and competence in the field. My education at UNLV has prepared me well for this role, and the skills I have acquired through my coursework have enabled me to integrate seamlessly into the PRACTICE facility mental health clinic. This internship has not only solidified my career aspirations but also enhanced my self-assurance in applying my academic knowledge in a real-world setting.

To be successful in this internship, the foundational knowledge and skills acquired through my psychology degree were crucial. Courses in abnormal psychology, counseling techniques, and substance abuse were particularly relevant. Additionally, my personal experiences with counseling allowed me to empathize with clients and understand the therapeutic process more deeply.

Completing this internship has reinforced my interest in becoming an addiction counselor. The hands-on experience has shown me the profound impact I can have on individuals' lives, further fueling my passion for this career path. To secure a full-time position in this field, I plan to pursue an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies at UNLV. This additional training will enhance my expertise and credentials, making me a more competitive candidate.

One piece of advice I have for incoming interns is to remain open-minded and proactive. Embrace every learning opportunity, seek feedback, and don't hesitate to ask questions. This approach will maximize the benefits of your internship and help you grow both personally and professionally.
