My time this summer as a College Savings Program Intern at the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office has been incredibly rewarding both professionally and personally. At first, I didn’t quite know what to expect, but things worked out tremendously for me. The State Treasurer’s Office is divided into different departments, and I was assigned to work for the College Savings division. Much of my work was oriented around helping my team prepare for the Back to School fair we held on July 15th, and preparing for the upcoming fall semester. The College Savings Team handles a considerable amount of financial resources for students going to university, the Millennium Scholarship for example. At UNLV, I study Political Science and Journalism. The State Treasurer's Office being an extension of the state government connected me well to Political Science, I received exposure to a government institution. What intrigued me most was being able to work for a local/state governing body.
My internship experience provided me both insight as well as exposure to a potential professional route I could pursue, if I decide to, within politics and government. The knowledge I gathered about issues relevant to Nevada as a state and the resources the state government provides for its constituents will remain with me. After my graduation, I will pursue a career in law, which has an overlap with how our state government functions. I wouldn’t say there are any particular educational requirements necessary for my internship position, I think it’s more significant how professionally you maintain yourself. However, if I were to acquire a full time position, by state regulation I would need a bachelor’s degree and training by the state pertaining to the specific position. For example, I completed a confidentiality training, but that was straightforward. If I were to work full time for the College Savings team, I would need to be well acquainted with Nevada statute and policy.
For any incoming interns, I recommend researching your organization before you begin working, so you have a foundation to operate on. Furthermore, I recommend a general proficiency in Microsoft applications, most offices utilize them. Additionally, maintain yourself professionally, interact kindly with the people around you, and ask questions as necessary. I asked for clarification on each task I was given to ensure I was fulfilling what was asked of me. I’m thankful to the College of Liberal Arts for assisting me with this opportunity!
