My internship has taught me a lot of pertinent skills related to my professional goals. My ultimate goal is to be staffed on a television show writing in Hollywood, but there are steps to take before getting there. The entertainment industry is a game of personalities, it’s about who you know and not necessarily what you know. They say that networking is the way to get in. So, right now, I’m in my networking phase.
But Classy Communications is more than just networking to me or a springboard for another career down the road. I enjoy the work I do and I look forward to meeting with my supervisors to tackle problems together. Being an English major, I’m always looking to find new topics of discovery and this position as a marketing intern has made me all the more curious about an industry adjacent to the film industry.
Coming into the internship, I brought my writing, research, and social media skills to help me be successful. A knowledge base of strong communication, self sufficiency, and critical thinking skills are crucial to operating in the internship. I am very interested in continuing on in this industry, it’s all about making connections with people and crafting strong brand identities together. I love the collaborative nature of the work and I enjoy putting my best foot forward and honing in on new writing skills.
In order to pursue this career, I need to learn how to market myself more effectively, how to write press releases, how to interview, and how to convey my creative vision to others more succinctly.
To all upcoming interns, I advise you to keep a calendar and plan out your days in advance. Things happen! Sometimes you might want to have a day off, or work comes up, so it’s good to have a clear and visual representation of the work you’ll need to be doing. It helps avoid a separate struggle. Have fun, be open, don’t be afraid to speak to your supervisor and ask for more clarification. They’re there to help and want the best for you!
