Hello! My name is Brenda and I have been interning for the CCSD Stay in School Mentoring Project. I am currently doing administrative work for my supervisor which involves making spreadsheets to organize and know what senior communities surround CCSD schools to hopefully reach out and gain more mentors. I have also been working with Canva creating mentor quotes to motivate our mentors and soon when the CCSD school year starts, I’ll have the opportunity to mentor a student throughout the school year. This internship has and will benefit my future career as an Academic advisor, because it will allow me to gain the mentoring and counseling skills needed as an Academic advisor. I’ll be able to gain more insight and knowledge on how to effectively guide and advise a student as they navigate through school. My internship relates to my psychology major because I am able to put the knowledge I’ve acquired through courses I’ve taken that have taught me on how to help someone dealing with mental health, academic, and personal issues, to practice. I don’t think there would be obligatory requirements starting off in this internship but it would be very beneficial to learn throughout on how to help someone with mental health, academic issues and just how to motivate someone overall. Anybody frankly, that has the desire to mentor and guide someone would be qualified for this internship role and I’m sure many of us at some point have counseled or mentored someone in their life and if you haven't, I think this is an amazing opportunity to gain more experience and knowledge on guiding others. This internship isn’t a specific career but more so a volunteer opportunity but, I think the experience can help gain more knowledge and practice for careers such as a therapist, counselor, academic advisor or social worker. One piece of advice as you go into your internship is to be open to learning and helping even in the smallest details. I think besides learning about the career or volunteering of the internship, you are also able to learn about what a job entails and sometimes what goes behind running an organization. That can open up many opportunities if one allows themselves to be taught and is willing to help in the big and small things.

Love your quote photo! I agree! I think I learn more from my students than they do from me sometimes. Loved having you in class and look forward to having you as a higher ed. colleague!
