This internship has benefitted my future career because it has helped me get my foot in the door in terms of serving my community and providing aid to the low income population, which is the community I want to focus on in my career. It has given me necessary experience in client intake and handling grievances. This internship tied into my major because despite providing physical aid rather than mental, I still had to listen to the client‘s stories and give my support and sometimes a little advise. I am a psychology major, which means I am not only learning about people‘s behavior and motivations, but also learning the best way to handle and react to others. This has helped me a lot when interacting with clients. I do not believe that I needed any educational requirements before this internship. I believe that taking psychology courses that pertained to social behaviors helped when it came to discerning how I should interact with someone, but I belive that the requirements one should have is patience, empathy, and determination, all of which are traits people can develop over time. I am interested in this particular career after my internship ends because I am very passionate about helping others. This internship has allowed for me to show up for people and give them more of a voice. I have not only provided food and hygiene for others, but I have also helped fight for temporary housing and finding jobs for people who are in need. this internship motivates me to give 110% to all people and I become more and more driven each day to make an impact on some way for somebody. In order to secure a full-time position in this career, I would need to better familiarize myself with all of the housing, rental, legal, and utility assistance that Las Vegas has to offer. One piece of advice that I have for incoming interns is to remember that you are doing everything you can and don’t get too upset if you are unable to provide further assistance to a client. It is easy to get frustrated when trying to find resources for clients and it can seem hopeless, but it is important to remember that you are doing everything you can for someone who probably has not had anyone fight for them they way you are.
