I had the opportunity to work with an established professional in my desired field, Dr. Colleen Parks, who provided me with research guidance and mentorship. Working in the Human Memory Lab has helped me to develop new skills, such as data analysis, research methodology, and statistical analysis, that are essential for a career in cognitive psychology. It has been an invaluable opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I have learned in the classroom to real-world situations. This internship has allowed me to learn more about the research process and the various methods used in the field, which will be useful for my future studies. I even had the opportunity to present our research at the 2023 OUR's Symposium, where I was chosen as a finalist.
After completing this internship, I have found that I am more interested in pursuing a career in academia, specifically in the field of cognitive psychology. I am excited about the potential opportunities to conduct research and contribute to the advancement of the field. However, I also recognize that pursuing a career in academia is a challenging path that requires dedication, hard work, and a love for research.
To secure a full-time position in the field, pursuing a PhD is essential. Additionally, staying up to date with the latest industry trends, such as using python coding and other research endeavors, is important to remain competitive in the field. Building a strong network of professional connections and engaging in ongoing learning opportunities will also be beneficial.
My advice to incoming interns is to be proactive and take initiative in your work. Don't be afraid to ask questions or seek out additional learning opportunities. Your internship is a chance to learn and grow, so make the most of it. It's also important to build strong relationships with your supervisor and colleagues, as these connections may be valuable for future job opportunities.
In conclusion, my research internship in the Human Memory Lab has been a valuable experience that has helped me to solidify my career goals and gain new skills. I am grateful for this opportunity and believe it will benefit my future career in many ways.
Sincerely,
Sharica Lee
