This semester I was a legal intern for Short and Stevens Law, LLC which helped me understand my career ambitions and experience a new career field I dreamed about pursuing since I was a kid. I may have known what I wanted to do at a young age but knew I should keep an open mind because life can be unpredictable, so just trying my best and staying true to myself will lead me where I need to be. The question I had in my mind is should I pursue a career in law? I wanted to know the answer and applied to be an intern for an estate planning firm called Short and Stevens Law, LLC that was formed through a strong friendship between partners Whitney Short and Amanda Stevens.
The funny thing about growing up is you realize how much your needs and wants change. I wanted to be a lawyer growing up, I needed to be certain about pursuing a legal career, and I learned it is something that I do not want to do and that the other path I am thinking about pursuing is the best fit for me. I have always focused on others' expectations about me, but this time I focused on myself. I want to pursue a career that I will be happy in and make a positive impact on my community. Being a sociology major, my options are open and endless. I can explore every career field because it can all be tied to the foundations of sociology. I may not have taken a sociology of law class, but I found that all my sociology classes like sociology of medicine could tie back into my internship.
Pursuing an internship is knowing where your intentions lay, do you want to gain field experience? Do you want to gain and improve skills? Do you want to meet and network with new people? You do not have to have all the answers to these questions and more, but being certain in your decision is important to follow through with a big commitment. This is the most important advice I will provide to COLA 402 potential students/interns.
For those interested in pursuing a legal career, Short and Stevens Law can be a great fit for you if you are willing to learn, be part of a team, and have insight into an attorney's daily life! The firm specializes in estate planning, and you will eventually learn what a trust, will, power of attorney, etc. are and help legal assistant Sherry Quinney with daily office tasks. Both Whitney and Amanda attended UNLV, Boyd Law School and are active in the school community, so they can provide you with advice for LSAT prep, law school applications, etc. After all, to become a lawyer, you must get a bachelor's’ degree, go to law school, and study and pass the bar exam.
Lastly, I am grateful I enrolled in this class and gained the experiences and knowledge that I did because now I can follow the right path that was always meant for me and become the person I want to be!

I think it's great that you still had a good experience with your internship even though you realized law school is not something you want to pursue. It can be so difficult to make those adjustments and change what you thought your life ambitions were, but I'm happy you were able to do what you needed to make yourself happy! I hope that you're able to find a career you enjoy and find fulfilling.
