Museum Reminiscence

For the past 8 months thus far, I've been the Communications Intern for the Las Vegas Natural History Museum located in the Cultural Corridor. Growing up, I loved going here for the "Prehistoric Gallery" better known as the "Dinosaur Gallery" and I loved the "Ancient Egypt Gallery" so I was thrilled to be able to finally work here. My experience has been nothing short of a dream. I've had no better luck than having a caring, and supportive supervisor who also happens to be the Executive Director, and by being surrounded by a group of determined, hard-working, and helping individuals who make up the Museum team. I've never worked in a place where all the employees were passionate specifically about their workplace before and it is truly a wonderful experience.

Anyone can find an area in this place where they might fit in as there is a wide array of jobs to be filled ranging from taxidermy, to working in the paleo lab, or giving tours to guests around the Museum (and just about a 100 other things). I found I was able to be as creative as I wanted and I had autonomy with photos, videos, newsletters, and marketing ads as long as they fit with the mission of the Museum. If independence isn't your strong suit when it comes to working, this internship will change that. You are encouraged to think outside the box, voice your opinions, and get your job done in a timely manner in whatever fashion suits you best. Time management is crucial as sometimes you'll get more tasks than you'd expect, but only enough for it to be a minor challenge if you choose to accept it. Stay organized. Things move quickly here. Think on your toes, make lists, and learn to ask for help if necessary; people love to help and it's okay. That's something I had to learn. And networking. I've met so many amazing people who enjoy the same topics as I do and it's very refreshing.

I knew I already wanted to work for Museums when I graduated with a degree and this internship solidified that idea. There's something new to learn everyday and I don't find myself feeling stagnant. I'm hoping that the combination of this experience and my major in Anthropology and minor in History will further send me into a fruitful and long career working for many different museums. I've learned to work with so many different departments (volunteers, education, the Directors, Husbandry, Paleo lab etc.) that when my time comes to leave the Las Vegas Natural History Museum I'll be comfortable and confident enough to apply my skills, ideas, and ambitions elsewhere. Until then, I'll enjoy my stay.
