My internship at Dress for Success was a definite learning experience. It has provided me with great skills in the realm of professional support, resources, and overall client resources. I believe this internship will benefit my future career in more ways than I imagined, starting with the skills in client services. Interning with Dress for Success has given me the confidence to speak with a diversity of people, be versatile, and take on roles in the midst of disorganization. This is beneficial in my future career I’d like to take up on as I feel like I would be working under pressure and work with people of many different backgrounds. In addition, this internship has helped me learn to work in unexpected circumstances, thus giving me the opportunity to practice the skill of adaptability. I do think this internship somewhat ties into my major of study as I’ve come across the different traumatic backgrounds that various of our clients had to face and are now beginning to learn to live their lives. Though I am not in the position of therapeutically elaborating on such topics with them, I am still given the ability to show empathy, learn the many signs and obstacles faced by each, and direct them to the best resources to the best of my ability. Looking back on the experience I had, I believe some of the educational requirements I needed to be successful in this internship is communication, conflict resolution planning, and different aspects on connecting with clientele. I am extremely thankful that this role has given me many skills and has taught me a lot, but this wouldn’t be a career I would be interested in as I have my eyes on a different field that I am passionate about that correlates more with neuroscience. One piece of advice I have for incoming interns is to participate more in workshops and events within this internship as I wish I would have had more time to do so. This would help substantially with making greater connections with clientele, as well as other organizations, and assist with better communication skills. This internship has provided me with a great deal of wonderful experiences, and I am grateful for this experience.
