My internship with Project FOCUS has benefitted my career in positive ways by adding a new appreciation for education. In my role, I was an Educational Coach for the Autistic Spectrum Resource Center providing direct and indirect services to a select number of students while maintaining a caseload and overseeing a person-centered plan. I learned a lot while working with the disability resource center on how to provide students and their families with supportive services on daily living, academics, and job-ready skills. I was really nervous and shy about starting in a new field and role, but the staff was very welcoming and friendly. I have learned to use my voice so that I could be an advocate for others in professional settings as well as for myself. Overall, it has taught me to create a plan, research, communicate, convey information, and represent the interest and rights of others. This new leadership skill will continue to benefit me personally and professionally to take action in meaningful ways throughout my career.
My major of study is Sociology which teaches students about different cultures and groups in society for social awareness. Sociology has a lot to do with data and research. My academic assignments often revolved around researching different social topics, communities, and issues. During my time at Project FOCUS, I got a chance to see firsthand how institutions, such as nonprofits, serve a great purpose for marginalized communities. Moreover, I also got to implement and track students' progress weekly to see what methods work best for each individual.
There are no specific educational requirements because they accept all majors. If you have experience it's a plus if not, you don’t need to have any previous experience in case management or education because they do provide training at the start of the position through presentations and documents that you can access anytime on google drive. You just need to have an upbeat attitude, good communication skills and be passionate about helping others succeed.
Through my internship, I have learned a great deal about working for a non-profit organization. I enjoyed my time coming to the office every day and working with many students. I am still on the fence about working in counseling or education and would like to seek out other career opportunities in the future. Overall, it was a great learning experience and I would like to volunteer my time working with adults and children in the autistic community.
Skills needed for this career are an upbeat attitude and a smile! It would help if you are well organized to learn about student schedules and assignment deadlines. Some computer experience skills would be helpful in using Google docs, calendar, and excel.
A piece of advice I would give to incoming interns is to be consistent with students and to show your amazing personality. Each student has unique traits that can be applied and guided to success. Lastly, don't be afraid to ask questions, the staff is helpful and amazing!

Hi Brittny,
After reading about your experience with Project FOCUS I can really tell you enjoyed you gained so much knowledge and maybe even learned a little bit more about yourself. I think being able to work with students and families is a whole different ballgame compared to just working with one person at a time. You would need so much patience in order to be successful there and I am glad that you had such a good experience!
