My overall experience throughout my internship has helped me to never underestimate the value of networking and accumulating as much knowledge as possible no matter the work environment. While this internship really catered to my entrepreneurial journey more than my educational career, I believe the skills I learned to enhance my communication will be greatly utilized no matter which route I decide to pursue in the future.
My internship focused on the business of marketing and production. My current studies at UNLV are focusing on psychology and sociology. I wouldn’t completely say the internship didn’t tie into my studies mainly because my studies help me to understand people and their reactions, thoughts, expectations, etc. so while it may seem like two completely different fields, people will always need to be properly handled in order to reach positive results. Throughout my internship I was able to do a lot of communicating with people from multiple backgrounds. I was able to work with upcoming artists and successful CEOs. They all required different management but I was lucky enough to be properly equipped for any room I landed in. I sat in and contributed to team meetings, created presentations all did research for potential clients, all of which allowed me to become more comfortable with performing professionally under pressured conditions.
My educational requirements that helped me throughout this internship definitely came from my previous psychology studies and certain practices that were taught in COLA. Being able to read a room and carefully observe the client’s personality helped to understand the manner in which I needed to present myself to them. The most effective skill was definitely the ability to confidently pitch myself in a timely manner seeing as though most people have busy schedules and short attention spans.
I could definitely see myself pursuing another opportunity like my internship offered. I enjoyed the experience of creating, planning and executing for different individuals. Seeing the success of what seemed to be busy work in the moment wa very rewarding. I also loved how it gave me the opportunity to travel and network frequently.
I would advise anyone who is interested in this field to be open to inconvenience. Make the most of every opportunity, never be afraid to present your ideas and just be professional at all times. I gained multiple opportunities due to small inconveniences because I kept an open mind and managed to create solutions in the process.
