My intention for signing up for this internship has been to add some diversity to CV for my application to graduate school. If it accomplishes that goal, then I think it will be a benefit to me. However at this time, it is too early to tell whether or not the internship will serve me in that way. It may serve to benefit me in other ways should I decide to stay on with foundation to complete a special project I am currently working on. The project is a culture book for the organization and it has been a project the foundation hasn’t had time to focus on. As a writer, it would be good for my career to have my name on an official publication such as this. This project is something I am looking forward to completing. Aside from that, my role in the internship doesn’t directly relate to my major of study which is English with a focus on creative writing. While the foundation does have a newsletter and blog, I have just now been considered for as a writer for the blog but for only one entry. Aside from this recent change, I was placed on the marketing and administration teams, two areas that I have no interest in. If I were going to school for marketing, perhaps I would be better equipped to handle such a role. Most of the marketing for this company takes place on social media and I am not someone who is interested in social media from a professional perspective. I don’t even have social media applications on my phone. Therefore, I would not be interested in having any job that required me to be active on social media for marketing purposes. I have been wondering if having a job where I write for an organization as opposed to directing my own writing would be something that works for me. Since at this time I don’t know what it’s like to do that for the foundation, I can’t say whether or not such a job would interest me in the future. What I do know about my future is that I want to write things I am interested in and passionate about and those areas don’t exists within my internship. Being a self-published author isn’t something someone needs to necessary go to college for but there are certain types of training, education, experience, and skills that I need in order to secure a lucrative future as an author. One pursuit in particular that relates to one of my stories has to do with linguistic studies and language development. I want to develop a language for a book that I have been writing and further linguistic studies from a reputable institution will come in handy. Also any continuing education resources I can find about running a small business would be helpful as well. After my experience I would encourage interns to make sure they intern at a company that will give them what they are seeking from the internship. That was obviously my intention when I applied to be a content writer but was informed that I would be doing marketing and administrative tasks. If you are in a position that doesn’t align with your intentions, then speak up to the leaders of that internship or someone from the college to get better matched into a role that works for you. After all, you are doing the internship for your benefit, not the benefit of the company.
