In Summer 2024
Hello everyone! My name is LeeAnna Sueno and I wanted to share my experience with my summer internship. I went the self-secured route and found an internship with Amazon, a household name to millions. My internship started on July 17th and is coming to an end on August 23rd. Over ten weeks, I have been being trained as an HR Partner and working on a project involving increasing the positive response rate of the post-service survey that is sent to associates after working with HR. This internship allowed me to apply knowledge from my degree in a realistic setting as I am a Psychology and Anthropology major. This internship has helped me refine technical skills such as project management and data entry while teaching me how to work with people in a true diversity, equity, and inclusion mindset. I had never considered entering the HR field before this, but the experience made me realize what I truly enjoy: helping people have a better day. To stay in this field, I definitely need to graduate with my bachelor's degree and develop more knowledge of things like state labor laws to be able to effectively assist the associates I would be working with. I also would like to continue coming out of my shell. I am an introvert and often am described as quiet, so it was quite jarring to see how forward-facing Amazon's HR department was, so if I want to continue this career path I definitely have to work on how I socialize with others. Even if I happen to not pursue HR in the future, the skills I have learned here are transferrable to any career I would choose to pursue. Naturally, there is pros and cons to anything. I would say for any other interns considering a position in HR, you should definitely evaluate your service skills and patience. A field like this requires an open mind and the ability to juggle several tasks at once to get to the same conclusion. For any incoming interns in general, remember that at the end of the day, an internship is what you make out of it. The company is going to get what they want out of you, so you deserve to get what you want out of it! Do not be afraid to mess up, you're an intern for a reason. It's all a learning curve, so enjoy it while you can and use it as a stepping stone for deciding where you want to see yourself in the future. As a fun tidbit, here's a snapshot of the Amazon HR Intern Summit! This summit is typically in-person in Seattle, but due to scheduling issues it was held virtually this year. I am on the far left in the glasses and the hat. This was such a great experience and such a wonderful way to connect with other HR interns in the U.S. I will never forget it!
