My name is Andrea Seel. I did my COLA internship with Classy Communications as a marketing intern. My internship tied into my major because it gave me something of an opportunity to apply my studies (psychology) to the real world. For instance, my studies in psychology helped me to know how to phrase and design things when I was managing their social media accounts and creating content for them. (For just one example: how do certain colors impact people’s state of mind? What color schemes should I use to leave a certain impression on viewers?) It has benefited my future career because I have learned many skills regarding technology, social media, and general professionalism and communication. I don’t think that I needed any more education than I currently have in order to be successful at this internship; in fact, I probably would have done alright even if I were still in high school. A lot of the training needed was provided by my supervisor. I am not interested in a career in marketing or anything related to it, mostly because the subject itself does not interest me as much as other things. The main draw it has is a vague relationship with psychology, but it’s not enough of one to hold my interest. To have a career in marketing, generally, it is important to have at least an associates degree (but preferably a bachelor’s degree) in marketing or a related field. Related work and internship experience are also usually required or preferred. One piece of advice I have for incoming interns is to be very attentive to your work. Details matter greatly in any job or career.
