In Spring 2022
This semester (Spring 2022), my internship was a position as the Data & Technology Director for the Colorado Democratic Party. My major at UNLV is in Political Science, and this was a position that relates directly to some of my past coursework in my major. The knowledge and skills required for this position included administration of the voter and volunteer database, advanced Excel, SQL, network technology and various software used in political organizing. To be effective at analyzing voter trends and behavior, one also needs a strong background in the political landscape and demography of the state and the specific districts. For better and for worse, working in politics is often about making connections in order to find new opportunities, so this organization was a place that I could make those for the future. Although this position was in line with my major and my previous experience, I have decided not to continue working in the political space. Mine is an unusual situation because I have been working in the field since 2007, so this experience was an extension of work that I had been doing for a significant amount of time. After having worked long, stressful hours in many election cycles, I realized the need to switch gears into a field that was healthier. The internship program was valuable in my situation, because it provided me with learnings that helped my mind shift towards finding a new career field. Fortunately, working in this position and those previous provided me with opportunities to learn technical and management skills, which are valuable in any industry. I now have a great job working remotely for a startup, doing technical support engineering work. I can continue my political work as a volunteer, which has always been rewarding.
