My internship experience was in Calm Clinic Psychiatry in where I was a Care Coordinator intern. I learned leadership skills by working with an amazing team to implement new strategies. Also, I learned the differences between insurance plans and how patients can use their benefits. Moreover, I created an 8-week Group Therapy Course for Stress Management & Co-Facilitated Group focuses on Latino Community. Therefore, all these new skills acquired in my internship benefited my future career because a therapist has all these abilities to work one-by-one patient and improve mental wellness. My internship tie into my major of study because my major is Psychology, and I did the internship in a Psychiatry Clinic in where I have to communicate with different patients. The first thing I learned in my internship was confidentiality which is very important, and they have procedures for collect patient information. Also, I had a conference meeting with the co-founder of the Clinic, Dr. Zand, who taught us the basic information for Psychotherapy. In my opinion, I would recommend having general knowledge about health insurance because the intern would have to update an insurance spreadsheet every week. Also, it is important to have good communication and leadership skills because the intern needs to take the initiative. In fact, the intern would work directly with the director of operations, Samantha, who would assign you different task every week. Thus, it is important to have a good communication among the team. In my case, I am looking for a graduate program which is Clinical Mental Health Counseling at UNLV. However, it is very expensive, and I have the plan of getting a full-time position at NSHE institutions because they help you out with the tuition. After completing my graduate school and becoming a Counselor or Therapist, I will consider working with a Clinic, but at the moment I have to focus on my short-term goals. It depends on the full-time position that you would like to apply for because if you are looking for a full-time position as Counselor or Therapist, you will need to complete a graduate program and get license in the state of Nevada first. One advise for incoming interns is that you try to ask as many questions as you can because it is the only way you can learn in this field. Always stay connected with your team, and communication is the key for success in this field.
