To have the ability to share my knowledge, experience, and skills to incoming psychology majors was both an honor and a privilege. The Peer Mentor Internship has not only benefitted me professionally but personally. Over the 4 years of studying psychology; communication, listening, and understanding are the most important skills in order to connect to others. Through this internship I have been able to both strengthen these skills and connect to my fellow peers. I aspire to become a school counselor and feel that this internship has greatly reassured me that my study and my career is right for me. The various conversations I've had with the students have helped me recognize that I enjoy helping, listening, and understanding others. Regardless of their background. I want to continue my education in psychology, strengthen my communication skills, and understand multicultural backgrounds in order to be a better candidate for my community. Through this internship I've enjoyed being a resource for students and would like to expand on that in my career. A piece of advice I'd give for incoming interns is to take a chance. Before I interned as a peer mentor I was extremely nervous-- I was anxious and felt self conscious of my capabilities. However, now that it's coming to an end I'm confident, outspoken, and feel like a better leader. If I hadn't taken the initiative to intern as a peer mentor I would not have improved as much as I did in the course of 4 weeks. I am extremely grateful to have had this opportunity and will continue to use the skills I've strengthened and learned in my day-to-day.
