My piece of advice to an incoming intern is to take advantage of this opportunity and intern in a career field you are interested in. I chose to volunteer with the Clark County Public Defense office because I am an aspiring attorney. I am majoring in Philosophy: Law and Justice. I wanted to volunteer with the public defenders because I hope to someday provide legal counsel to indigent defendants in criminal cases. While interning I experienced hands-on work with attorneys and paralegals, interacted with clients, assisted with case organization and research, prepared motions and other written documents for the client. I attended Motion hearings, arraignments, Initial Appearance Court, and Appeals. Something I kept in mind by choosing this internship is the potential to build relationships, and network with others who I could work and network with for years to come. Internships can lead you to a career because it gives you the chance to try out different fields within a specific career. As a legal intern I learned a lot about law school. This internship gave me a better understanding of the law and allowed me to build experience in my specific field. I encourage everyone to take my advice and intern at a job or career you are interested in because it will help clear the way for the right career path for you. At first I knew I wanted to become a lawyer but I did not know what kind of law I wanted to practice post law school. After my internship I now want to become a criminal defense attorney because of the type of network and connections I made along the way.
