Going into this internship I knew that I needed to have good interpersonal skills in order to to cooperate and create effective relationships with people who have mental health challenges. I also thought having good organizational skills to communicate events, programming with fellow interns, and addressing needs and concerns to my supervisor proved to be vital as well. This internship ties to my major of psychology very neatly, as it pertains to my focus on becoming a therapist. So working with people from support groups helped me identify the needs of the people and what kind of resources are available in our community. Particularly with programming fellow interns to work with kids who live with mental health problems and help them by being a peer and advocating for self care and resources in order for them to be self sufficient in their recovery while providing guidance when needed. becoming more aware This has only boosted my confidence in my chosen career after completing this internship. The skills that I aim to improve will benefit not only my career but also improve my overall quality of life among my peers. Wanting to help the community in my own way was strengthened through my time with the wonderful people at NAMI of Southern Nevada. I hope through my own hard work in combination with growing experiences with NAMI over the summer as a Youth Peer Recovery Support Specialist (YPRSS) will it continue to push me in the direction of mental health awareness and advocacy in the community.
