From start to finish, I have wholeheartedly enjoyed my time while being at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum. Everyone at the museum has been involved in helping to guide me through my time there, allowing me to get the most out of this internship. During my internship here I have been exposed to the daily functions of working in a museum setting and its educational department, as well as, the inner workings of a non-profit. The Las Vegas Natural History Museum is deeply involved within the Las Vegas community, outreaching to the schools and children of our valley. Doing so requires building a relationship with the teachers and schools of our community, making them familiar with the experiences we are able to provide for their students, which I have witnessed first hand.
I have had the opportunity to be involved in planning and preparing museum events to help meet the needs of a non-profit, handle historical artifacts and specimens essential to the museum experience, and also work closely with the educational director to provide outreach and educational opportunities for the students of our community. This has provided me with insight in the areas of museum management, history, and education.
This first hand experience has given me a taste of possible career fields I could potentially choose to follow down. These fields include museums, historical archives, or teaching history at a school, and all now seem realistically attainable because of the experience I gained during my internship here. I would definitely recommend interning at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum to anyone.
