I had the amazing opportunity to intern at the Law Firm of Higbee & Associates this semester, and I have gained so much knowledge about the legal field. As a political science and economics major with hopes to attend law school, this internship has benefited me by providing a solid foundation for the work that goes into the pre-litigation process, revealing to me the importance of the work of lawyers and other legal professionals. This valuable knowledge will propel me through my future journey of becoming a lawyer.
As a copyright intern, I helped screen images for clients and prepare demand letters for infringers, all work that contributes to protecting the firm’s clients’ intellectual property. It’s been eye-opening to be directly involved with copyright law, as I’ve only really read about policy in textbooks for my major classes, which was knowledge that still helped me as I navigated my tasks as an intern. However, I believe that anyone can be successful in this internship without educational requirements, as long as they work hard, have a passion for learning, and are willing to make and learn from mistakes.
Initially, I was intimidated by the internship, worrying I was not qualified enough to be involved with the legal process, but I have gained the confidence to continue pursuing a career in law after this internship. That said, I plan to attend law school following my undergraduate and continue gaining experience in the legal field so that I may eventually become a lawyer. I also understand that wanting to grow is key to gaining a full-time position in this field as well, and I hope that I will continue to be challenged to learn more and more.
For incoming interns, my advice is to be confident and not allow yourself to become hindered by obstacles that come your way. Being chosen as an intern at any site is proof that you are a qualified candidate and deserve this opportunity. Remember this as you face struggles during your internship, and push yourself to improve and learn as much as you can. Make the most of your experience.
