This internship has benefited my future and I tremendously. I’ve gotten numerous job offerings since beginning this internship and have made many influential and meaningful connections with people who can help me get further in the political realm. These people have not only offered to help me but have given me so much confidence in my ability to be successful in this industry and career. As a Political Science major, working as a Government Affairs intern for the Vegas Chamber of Commerce was a dream come true in terms of working in my preferred future career. Not only did this help my future career but it also counted for my PSC 499 Senior Seminar class at UNLV. This saves me time, money, and allows me to pursue a career in politics early. Many of the basic prerequisites for any higher level political science course at UNLV would be needed to excel in this internship, specifically any classes that focus on the many ways politics and business intertwine. With this internship, many skills that I had to depend on and develop over time involved networking and quick thinking on my feet. Adjusting to a highly competitive, social, and fast-paced environment was slightly difficult at first but a breeze with the help of my advisors.
For an incoming intern, I would say the most important part of the process is to be fully open and available to everything that your mentors, advisors, and peers want to teach you. By just doing the easy part's like showing up and completing the work they give you, you are already showing yourself to be a reliable worker and someone who's willing to be a part of the team. Taking that extra step doesn't take much energy but can take you everywhere in a career.
