Duties: The Research Team of the Save Ancient Studies Alliance (SASA) is investigating the “downward trend” in the study of Ancient Studies in the U.S. and abroad. In our effort to ground our claims and proposed solutions in objective evidence, this team conducts in-depth sociological research and analysis on the downward trend in Ancient Studies throughout the US educational system. We also work to produce and present proactive methods for solving problems in Ancient Studies. The end goal is to publish a White Paper and share our research at academic conferences and in peer-reviewed journal publications, as well as with relevant professional organizations, higher education stakeholders, and policy-makers. Interns will work directly with Dr. Valeria Zupieta-Lupo in this research which focuses on trends in higher education, funding, degrees awarded/pursued, demographics, and career pathways for Ancient Studies degree holders. During this remote internship, interns will join a team collecting data on a variety of educational indicators, analyzing that data, composing results, as well as researching solutions and producing videos about them. Student interns will learn about the various aspects of the research process (including qualitative and quantitative methods, abstract writing, developing research questions, reading literature, recognizing and evaluating sources, project development and implementation, writing various elements of a research project, incorporating social justice in research), as well as working with free, online archives and data sets. Student interns will also gain experience in using research tools for both academic and non-academic environments, such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, survey software, Adobe tools, programming languages, etc. Student interns will also practice written and visual forms of academic communication (posters, academic conferences, papers) and public communication (multimedia, blogs). We will also teach interns how to deploy “soft” skills when communicating with stakeholders to acquire data, forming collaborations, and interacting with the public. Requirements: We are interested in working with and mentoring creative self-starters interested in using their internship to advance their research skills. We seek candidates who excel at working in remote environments, both alone and with a team. Interns may be undergraduates or graduates, the minimum age being 18. Pursuit of a degree in Ancient Studies is not required. Familiarity with Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Docs, etc.) is preferred for all interns. Other desired (but not required) skill sets for the research team include knowledge of statistical analysis and quantitative research methods, and/or computational software (such as R or Python).
