The selectee will assist with the effort to ensure proper public lands and records management through the creation of a library resource intended for use by Reclamation employees, entities requesting federal permitting or assistance and their contractors, and qualified researchers. The selectee will be provided with context for the proposed work, consisting of a basic primer in the mission and functions, generally, of the federal government and, specifically, the Bureau of Reclamation as well as federal social and environmental justice laws and regulations, including the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act, and program and project management. Interns will inventory physical records, confirm an appropriate physical and digital presence in Microsoft Office Suite, and record associated geographic data. The selectee will also have the opportunity to assist in directly related program administrative duties. Finally, subject to mission constraints, the selectee may have the opportunity to visit a Reclamation project in the Lower Colorado Region as an example of the federal compliance process and intent and the management of records and lands in action. By the end of the internship, students will possess a basic understanding of federal records management, federal compliance requirements, and basic administrative and management functions.
Position Description
The Bureau of Reclamation is a contemporary water management agency best known for constructing dams, powerplants, and canals in the 17 western United States, having constructed more than 600 dams and reservoirs. We are the largest wholesaler of water and the second-largest producer of hydroelectric power in the United States. Reclamation's mission is to manage, develop, and protect water and related resources in an environmentally and economically sound manner in the interest of the American public. The Lower Colorado of the Bureau of Reclamation works to implement Reclamation’s mission in portions of Arizona, California, and Nevada. We place great emphasis on fulfilling our water delivery obligations, water conservation, water recycling and reuse, and developing partnerships with our customers, states, and Native American Tribes. We also find ways to bring together various interests to address the competing needs for limited water resources.
